INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Dear Customer,
Thank you for purchasing JOBST
®
, the medical
gradient compression hosiery collection that is
recommended by physicians.
JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ is designed for maximum
patient compliance for the effective management
of venous leg ulcers. JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ is
an efficacious and easy-to-use compression
system for the management of venous leg
ulcers. JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ also helps prevent
recurrence of venous leg ulcers. Two components,
a Medical Stocking (with or without a zipper)
and a Compression Liner, provide compression
with decreasing pressure gradient from distal to
proximal.
1. Indications
The JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ compression system is
indicated for the following conditions:
• Management of venous leg ulcers after edema
reduction
• Helps prevent recurrence of venous leg ulcers
2. Contraindications
The JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ compression system
is contraindicated when any of the following
conditions are present:
• Ischemia (e.g. advanced arterial disease)
• Untreated septic phlebitis
• Uncontrolled congestive heart failure
• Phlegmasia cerulea dolens
• Incompatibility to fabric
3. Cautions
• Skin infections
• Severely compromised skin sensibility and
impaired sensitivity of the limb
• Weeping dermatoses
• Immobility (confinement to bed)
• Conditions in which increased venous and
lymphatic return is not desired.
• Open wounds must be covered with an
appropriate dressing before the compression
liner is put on.
• Appropriate foot wear must be worn when
walking to help prevent falls.
• JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ is recommended following
edema reduction by the use of short stretch
compression bandaging.
• While the Compression Liner may be worn
24 hours a day, the patient must remove the
Medical Compression Stocking during bed rest.
• The Compression Liner should be changed
in accordance with daily hygiene and wound
inspection needs.
• Appropriate hygiene and skin care should be
applied.
• After complete healing of the venous leg ulcer,
continued use of JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ or other
appropriate Medical Compression Stocking (e.g.
JOBST
®
Medical LegWear) is recommended to
help prevent recurrence.
• Medical compression garments should only
be used after consultation with your doctor
or therapist and checked regularly by them
on the appropriateness of your therapy, also
considering age and health status.
• When re-ordering a garment we recommend
remeasuring the patient as the limb
circumference might have changed.
• Incorrectly measured and badly fitting products
may cause constriction leading to e.g. skin
necrosis, pressure ulcers and pressure related
peripheral nerve damage during use.
• If you notice discomfort, pain, numbness,
changes in skin color, appearance of new wounds
or swelling during wear, stop using the product
and contact your healthcare professional.
• The attending physician decides whether
compression in general can be applied to
patients suffering from the following diseases:
rheumatoid arthritis, complex regional pain
syndrome, CRPS (M. Sudeck), malignant
lymphedema, gangrene.
• Patient measurements should be taken by a
trained person to determine the correct product
size needed and to decide whether a made-to-
measure or ready-to-wear garment is required.
Special notes:
• Caution: long fingernails and jewelry may
damage the stockings when putting them on.
For easier application use rubber gloves or a
donning aid.
• Do not bring the compression stockings into
contact with greasy ointments, body lotions
or similar substances unless recommended by
JOBST
®
.
• Loose threads or loops should not be cut off,
since this may cause holes or runs to form in the
stockings.
• Any serious incident that has occurred in
relation to this device should be reported to the
manufacturer and the competent authority of
your state.
• JOBST
®
UlcerCare™ is intended for single
patient use only.
4. Application
The best way to put on your JOBST
®
stockings:
JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ Compression Liner
Gather the Compression Liner in
both hands, so that the toes can
easily reach the end of the Liner.
Pull the Compression Liner onto the
foot, aligning the heel of the Liner
with the heel of the foot.
Gently pull the Compression Liner
up the leg, taking special care to
ease it over wound dressing.
Pull it upwards to the knee. Do not
roll down or fold the top of the
stocking.
Smooth any wrinkles and adjust the
heel and toe of the Compression
Liner for comfort.
JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ Medical Compression
Stocking without zipper
Apply the Compression Liner as
instructed above. Start with the
Medical Compression Stocking inside
out. Tuck the foot part inside up to
the heel and hold it with both hands,
seam facing down.
Stretch your garment as wide as
possible and in one motion, pull it
onto your foot. Put the heel pocket
over the back of your heel.
Take hold of the fabric just past your
toes always at the sides, never the
seams. Pull it up over your foot past
the ankle. It should now be right side
out. Adjust the garment so that the
heel is in place.
Adjust the toe area for comfort by
pulling your garment toward your
toes and releasing.
Now work it all the way to the knee
about 2" (5 cm) at a time, smoothing
the creases as you go – adjust any
wrinkles or uncomfortable spots by
gently pulling the fabric until the
pressure is even.
JOBST

UlcerCARE™ Medical Compression
Stocking with zipper*
Apply the Compression Liner as
instructed above. Open the zipper of
the Medical Compression Stocking
completely.
Point your toes and slip your foot
into the foot area. Place your thumb
between the zipper and your leg to
protect your skin.
Zip it closed, keeping the elastic
backing between your skin and the
zipper.
Adjust any wrinkles or uncomfortable
spots by gently pulling the fabric
until the pressure is even.
* When selecting Left or Right Closure (zipper), choose
the side opposite the wound.
5. Care instructions
JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ compression system should,
if at all possible, be washed daily, or at least every
other day. For this purpose, you may use a regular
mild detergent. Do not use laundry additives such
as fabric softener, optical brightener or stain
remover. Rinse your compression stockings well.
Roll up the wet compression stockings in a towel
after washing and press out excess moisture. Do
not wring. Do not dry the compressionstockings
on a radiator or in direct sunlight. For tumble
dryer compatibility please check your
compression stocking’s product label.
6. Directions for storage / Guarantee
JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™ compression system is
intended for immediate use and no expiry date
for storage is indicated. Due to wear or slackening
of the material, the medical efficacy can be
guaranteed for a wearing period of six months.
This assumes correct handling (e.g. product care,
donning and doffing).
Please protect your JOBST
®
UlcerCARE™
compression system from direct exposure to
sunlight, heat, and moisture. We recommend
storage at room temperature. If the vascular
disease persists after 6 months, please consult
your attending physician concerning the possible
need for a new compression stocking.
